I'm spending a huge amount of time building biotechnology ecosystems in Asia and Africa. My goal is to help people develop biotechnology that matches the needs of their country. I've met many research leaders in Africa, and I help them take research from their institutions out into companies.
For instance, I'm working with a group in Makerere University in Kampala to develop a set of diagnostics for animal, agricultural and human pathogens that affect the country.
At a different level, I'm increasingly invited to give lectures at universities throughout the world. In the past year, I've given seven lectures on my own experiences starting and building biotechnology companies. It's a rather new career for me, but one that I find very exciting. I hope what comes out of it are drugs and diagnostics that fit previously unmet needs.
